On Sunday, September 24, the Islamic Center of Southern California held a panel shared by Sayed Hadi Qazwini and Hassan Zeenni on the significance of Ashura in Sunni and Shi’i thought. Sayed Hadi discussed the historical context that led to Imam Husayn’s rise and ultimately the tragic events of the day of Ashura. He also discussed some of the broader lessons that may be derived from Imam Husayn’s mission and how they may be implemented in the context of American Muslim society today. Hassan Zeenni discussed the significance of Imam Husayn’s mission in the context of resistance to state injustice and oppression. The panel was followed by a fruitful Q&A session.
